Abington Christian Academy held its annual 100th day of school party Feb. 12. We had six special guest readers come to our school. Our class, the fifth and sixth graders, had three speakers: Wendy Heffinger, Wayne Lydon, and Mark Schultz.

Heffinger is the director of CareNet in Scranton. It is a business that helps parents who are not ready for children. CareNet also helps people become good parents. Heffinger said her favorite part of working at CareNet is that she can share the Gospel with the people she is helping. She read “Horton Hears a Who” to us. She chose this book because she wanted to refer to real life through the quote, “A person’s a person no matter how small.”

Our second reader was Lydon. He used to play baseball for the New York Mets. Ever since he was little, he dreamed of playing with the Mets! He said his dream came true, thanks to God. Lydon also said that anything could come true if you just believe in yourself. He read us a book about Babe Ruth. Ruth was an amazing baseball player who first played for the Red Sox, and then got sold to the Yankees. The Red Sox did not do well after losing Babe Ruth. But they had success in 2004, 2007, and 2013.

Schultz draws and writes comics that are called Prince Valiant, which are in over 300 newspapers nationwide. Schultz said he likes to work alone because he can work whenever he wants to. He said comics can communicate with lots of different people and are a fun way for people to see what you’re saying. He started drawing comics because he likes art, but it took him awhile to actually send his artwork to someone. When he finally sent it, they liked it and published it! He decided to draw a lot more after that.

The younger students in our school were read to by Richard Bradshaw, the Executive Director of the Ronald McDonald House in Scranton; Laura Gardoski, the Children’s Librarian at the Abington Community Library; and David Madeira, a radio speaker with his own show.

We had a very fun 100th day of school with all of these special guests, and we learned a lot about their jobs.
