Have you ever wondered what it takes to make a film? There is so much involved from screenwriting, to casting, to shooting and editing. On Thursday, July 17 at 7 p.m., the Dietrich will host local filmmakers as they show clips from their recent movies and discuss the filmmaking process.

We are very excited about this event, because two of the filmmakers, Jay Jadick and Benjamin Davis, used to work at the Dietrich when they were teenagers. The evening will showcase clips from their movie, “Driving Not Knowing,” which they created with Dylan Hansen-Fliedner, and Dane Mainella. They finished filming the movie, which is set in Wyoming County, and are now raising funds through kickstarter.com to cover the costs associated with post production, entry fees for film festival submissions and distribution.

The other short film that will be featured during the evening is “Pitchfork.” Produced by Todd Oravic and Ryan Wood and written by Kevin Conner, the movie is about a farmer who is trying to save both his drought-ravaged cornfield and his once happy marriage. It also is set in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Come out and join us for a sneak peek of these films, and support our local filmmakers. Admission is free.

Then on Saturday, July 19 from 1 to 7 p.m., gather up your family and friends, and make your way to Tunkhannock’s Riverside Park for River Day. Take in the beautiful scenery as you enjoy live music, participate in fitness activities, explore nature, learn about various environmental organizations, visit food and farm vendors and more.

There will also be nature activities, face painting and mural painting for kids. The Ross Park Zoo Mobile will be there will live animals for all ages to meet and learn about. High Energy Fitness and Karate will present a karate demo. The gym will also host mini fitness demos and classes that day too. Admission to River Day is free.

If you would like to experience the natural beauty of our area from the river, you can take part in one of two river floats that day. Offered by Endless Mountain Outfitters and Susquehanna Kayak and Canoe Rentals, you will have the option of kayaking from Mehoopany to Riverside Park or taking a shorter trip from Howland Preserve to the park. Another free event that is just around the corner is the Dietrich Children’s Theatre’s performance of “The Mouse’s Marriage.” Children and families are invited Saturday, July 26 at 11 a.m. to the theater for this Japanese folk tale. During this interactive play, audience members will meet a young mouse couple who fall in love and want to marry. But the girl’s father wants her to marry the strongest, smartest, best husband in the world. He thinks the best match is the Sun. But perhaps the Cloud is stronger than the Sun? Or maybe the Wind is smarter than the Cloud? Come and find out who makes the best match of all.
