The Waverly Community House, in conjunction with the YMCA, opened its “Afterschool at The Comm” program Sept. 3 for students in kindergarten though sixth grade.

Running Monday through Friday, 2:30 to 6 p.m., the program will include homework help, snacks, playtime and activities. The cost is $75 per week or $15 per day. The program terms are expected to change in October, after the Comm completes its certification process.

The need for the program in the Abingtons community stems from the current times, according to Comm Executive Director Maria Wilson.

“More and more parents are going back to work,” she said. “There’s more and more two-parent, or even single parent households where parents are working. It’s needed for children to be able to go somewhere after school, until the parents are home from work, where they can be in a healthy, supervised setting, do their homework, have a snack, play and interact with other kids. And we’ve sensed this for quite some time, so we’re just trying to provide that service.”

Wilson expects the program to start off slow, picking up momentum as the school year gets into full swing. In the future, she hopes to expand it into something even bigger.
