The Dietrich Theater in Tunkhannock will host a a Women’s Forum on Violence Against Women in Northeastern Pennsylvania Sunday, March 16 at 3 p.m.

This forum grew out of the book selections for Wyoming County Reads 2014, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne and 1,000 Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, and the women’s issues presented in these stories. The Women’s Forum, however, is only indirectly related to the books. All are invited to attend this free event.

According to the World Health Organization, 35% of women worldwide have experienced either intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime.

Key members of the community whose work is impacted by violence against women will bring their perspectives to help answer the following questions and more: Why do we have a culture of violence especially against women? Do laws protect women? What are the issues law enforcement officers face? What can you do to help someone you know is abused? What can anyone do to help?

Marnie Hiester, Associate Professor of Psychology at Misericordia University, will moderate the panel discussion. Panel members are: Janet MacKay, Executive Director, Victims Resource Center, Wyoming County; Patrick Rushton, Educator, Victims Resource Center, Wyoming County; Jeff Mitchell, District Attorney, Wyoming County; Gerald Idec, Assistant District Attorney, Wyoming County; and Laura Hasenzahl, Wyoming County Juvenile Probation Officer, Drug and Alcohol Specialist.
