I can hardly believe it’s August already. Where did July go? As I grow older, time seems to go by so much faster.
This month the Dietrich has a variety of offerings for all ages to enjoy. For children, artists-in-residence Steve Colley will teach the very popular Art Explorers Camp. During this camp, children ages 5 to 12 years old will learn about famous artists and the media they used to create masterpieces. They will explore working with clay on potter’s wheels and creating sculptures. Campers will also paint and create 3D collages. Classes will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, Aug. 11-15.
Adults will also have the opportunity to experience the arts in Introduction to Stained Glass. Taught by the Dietrich’s own Esther Harmatz, students will learn the basics of working with glass to create stained glass pieces including working with design, cutting glass, polishing, foil wrapping and soldering. Participants will leave the class with a finished piece. This one night workshop will be held Monday, August 18 from 6 to 9 p.m. and admission is $60. All materials and equipment will be provided. What is so nice about this basic class is that you can decide if you want to further pursue this craft without having to purchase all of the equipment.
Another introductory class that the Dietrich will offer in August is Yoga for Beginners. Taught by certified yoga teacher Donna Fetzko, participants will have the chance to experience the many benefits of yoga. Donna will introduce students to yoga postures, breathing exercises and relaxation techniques. Classes will be held from 10 to 11;15 a.m. on Wednesdays, Aug. 20 and 27. Students are encouraged to check with their health care practitioner before beginning the program. Admission is free thanks to the generosity of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Health Care Foundation.
The Dietrich will also present two concerts this month. Join us for the 13th Annual Gathering of Singers and Songwriters at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 10. This evening will be filled some of the best folk music from our region. The concert will feature musicians Tom Flannery, Lorne Clarke, Lara Herscovitch and KJ Reimensynder-Wagner. Lorne and Tom have joined us for all 13 Gathering of Singers and Songwriters, and the concert would just not be the same without their fun, light-hearted banter between songs. Admission is free; donations are accepted.
Hickory Project will be back for an afternoon of bluegrass music at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24. If you didn’t have a chance to see them at River Day last month, you will not want to miss this event. Hickory Project’s hard-driving acoustic music showcases the talents of national mandolin champion Anthony Hannigan, banjo phenomenon Dave Cavage, Steve Belcher, Craig Vance and Jillian Hannigan. Admission to the concert is also free and donations will be accepted.
