It’s been about eight years since PNC Field has seen a pigskin tossed around. That just changed.
For the next two seasons, the home to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders will host a Lackawanna Football Conference game between Abington Heights and Valley View, school and field officials announced Aug. 13.
The two teams agreed to play their Division I games at the stadium in 2014 and 2015. They both give up their home games in the series for the next two seasons.
At 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4, the two teams will play at the field, with Abington Heights being the home team.
Earlier this month, Abington Heights Athletic Director Randy Hanyon announced the decision to play the game at PNC Field.
Hanyon added the game may be moved back to Comets Stadium if there is inclement weather in the days leading up to the game.
“We took a hard look at it and it’s something unique and different,” Hanyon said. “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity for the kids.”
The last high school game played at that location was on Nov. 5, 2006, with Lakeland and Scranton Prep. Prep played its home games at the former Lackawanna County Stadium.
PNC Field also hosts the District 2 quadrupleheader in baseball each Memorial Day for the championship finals.
