The Abington Community Library will be hosting an Introduction to Slam Poetry with author/poet Elizabeth Gordon on Sunday, March 2 at 2 p.m. The free event is sponsored by the Friends of Elizabeth Gordon, a national award winner for Poetry Slams.

Teens through adults are invited. Light refreshments will be served.

Gordon will be reciting her own poems and giving insight to writing and delivering slam poetry.

A former English professor at the University of Scranton, Gordon currently teaches writing on the online division of Northampton (PA) Community College. Her writing has appeared in numerous journals and her nonfiction book “Walk with Us” won an Indie Award for multicultural nonfiction.

Her first full collection of poetry is due out this spring and is based on and in Cohoes, the upstate New York city where she currently lives.

Three weeks after her workshop at the Abington Library, Gordon will be in Austin, Texas, one of 72 women competing at the Women of the World Poetry Slam (WOWPS). She’ll be representing the Urbana Slam Poetry group from New York City. The WOWPS is a four-day poetry event featuring the best female poets in the world competing to crown a champion.
