WAVERLY TWP. — The Waverly Community House (Comm) will offer several children’s classes in 2016 with instructor Cheryl Mozdian, including the brand new Camp Discovery, which will combine art, music, and more to give children with special needs and families an opportunity to explore all that the Comm has to offer.

In addition to Mozdian’s curriculum, each class will feature a “special” guest. Camp Discovery, for children in second through sixth grades, will take place from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturdays, beginning Jan. 16 in the After School Room. The fee is $65 for all four weeks or $20 a week for drop-ins and three or less weeks.

Pre-registration is required and forms are available in the Comm office or online at waverlycomm.org.

The always popular Tots and Toddlers Music classes are back. These six-week classes are structured for children from 6 months to 5 years old and their parents/guardians. The classes are 45 minutes in length and are scheduled as follows: infants and toddlers, ages 6 months to 5 years, 5:45 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning Jan. 13 and 11:30 a.m. Saturdays, beginning Jan. 16; toddlers, ages 3 to 5 years, 9:15 a.m. Fridays, beginning Jan. 15; and infants and toddlers, ages 6 months to 2 years, 10 a.m. Fridays, beginning Jan. 15.

Each week a different element of music is explored. Through a mix of traditional children’s music and newly composed music, participants will experience singing, movement, music making and family bonding. Tots and Toddlers Music classes take place in the Scout Room and the fee is $55 for the six-week session.

Designed to help hearing children communicate using sign language, Sign and Sing classes are especially useful in developing communication skills with children. Appropriate for all beginners (no age limits), the program makes learning to talk easier, boosts self-esteem and self-confidence, stimulates intellectual development, strengthens the parent-child bond and has been proven to benefit children and their families. Sign and Sing classes are part of the Beginning American Sign Language Instruction for parents wishing to use ASL to communicate with their hearing child.

The classes are offered on Saturday mornings over a six-week period, with 60-minute sessions that use songs and games to teach sign language. Classes begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16 in the After School Room and will run through Feb. 20. The cost is $65 for the six-week series and includes take home materials.

The instructor, Cheryl Mozdian, is a board certified music therapist who has completed an approved Music Therapy program. Mozdian served in the Abington Heights School District from 2001 through 2013 directing the High School Band. She most recently taught the World Drumming Program at the Scranton School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children.
