CLARKS SUMMIT — Cory Spangenberg, a 2009 Abington Heights High School graduate and current member of the San Diego Padres Major League Baseball team served as the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of the Abingtons weekly meeting Feb. 4 at the Nichols Village Hotel & Spa.
Spangenberg, who was honored during a ceremony at Abington Heights earlier in the month, comes back home to Clarks Summit for four months after each season.
“It’s my home and it’s where I love to be,” he said.
Spangenberg shared several stories with Rotary members and guests including life as a Single-A baseball player.
“It was all coach buses to the games,” he said. “I was one of the younger guys on the team so I had to share a seat for a 12-hour bus ride. I would sit next to one of my best friends on the team who was 6-foot-5. He would take up a seat and a half and I’d be scrunched in half a seat.”
Abington Heights head baseball coach Bill Zalewski is proud of all Spangenberg has accomplished as well as his commitment to the community.
“Cory is such a great young man, he always has been through high school,” Zalewski said. “It’s just a real pleasure to be able to know him and be around him.”
