Since 1971 The Month of the Young Child has been celebrated across the United States. It was initiated by The National Association for the Education of the Young Child, when it recognized that it is in the early childhood years, birth through age eight, the foundation is built for children’s success in school and later life. The Dietrich Theater has been celebrating the Month of the Young Child for about 10 years, by bringing in The Tom Knight Puppet Show, the ever-popular show for preschoolers and the child in all.
Tom Knight brings his original songs and skits that act out stories with singing along, hand motions and even simple dance steps. Children and their caregivers will have a chance to meet Henry the Magician, Little Elephant, Allie the Alligator, and more characters, enacting stories about animals, food, recycling, and the importance of books and reading.
This year the Dietrich Theater has another special event for the Month of the Young Child – Meet the Orchestra sponsored by a friend of the Dietrich. Musicians Abi and Timothy Zieger and their musician friends invite families and their friends to learn about the sights and sounds of orchestral instruments and how they work together. There will even be an opportunity to try out some of the instruments.
