FACTORYVILLE — The Lackawanna Trail School Board approved a tax hike for district property owners with the approval of the 2016-17 budget June 27.
Lackawanna County residents will see a tax rate increase to 158.56 mills, and Wyoming County residents will see a 88.71 mills, with the approval of the $$20,500,469.27 budget.
A mill is $1 for every $1,000 in assessed property value.
In a related matter, Superintendent Matthew Rakauskas’ contract was renewed for another five years with a pay freeze.
Also, Amie Talarico was appointed as the new director of special education for the Lackawanna Trail School District..
Taraico, a special education teacher at the elementary center, was hired with a salary of $77,000 and replaces Stephanie Russell, whose resignation was also accepted during the meeting.
Curriculum Director Tania Ross thanked Russell for her service.
“She did wonders here as the director of special education and continuing to move our district forward and really tighten up our special education policies and procedures,” she said.
In other business, the board voted to approve the following:
• the resignation of Nancy Brown as yearbook advisor, effective immediately.
• the appointment of Melissa Flynn as an outsourced independent contractor for social work services for the 2016-17 school year at a salary of $35,000.
