SCRANTON — The Steamtown National Historic Site announced Charles Liberto was named grand marshal for Railfest 2016, an annual celebration of railroading past, present and future, at Steamtown National Historic Site.

The event will take place the Saturday and Sunday of Labor Day weekend, Sept. 3 and 4. Liberto will be honored at an opening ceremony 10 a.m. Saturday, hosted by Park Superintendent Deborah Conway.

Liberto, a native of Philadelphia, has been instrumental in the development and success of the annual Railfest events. A former Reading Railroad Company trainman, he brought together volunteers, community leaders and park staff 10 years ago to develop what has turned into a highly visible and nationally-known celebration of railroading at the national park.
