A man from J. Burden Contracting in Scott Township works on re-shingling the steeple at Waverly Community Church (The Free Methodist Church of the Abingtons), corner of Abington Road and Carbondale Road in Waverly Township, Thursday, Aug. 4. According to the church’s pastor, James Cohen, the building was constructed by a Presbyterian church in 1872, the same year Waverly Community Church was chartered. Rev. George Harvey, a circuit preacher, was the first pastor, serving from 1872 to 1873, according to the church’s website. In 1878, the congregation moved into an old school house on Beech Street in the center of town, where they met for 14 years. Then in 1892, they purchased the Presbyterian building for $700. Cohen said it was about 16 years ago the steeple was last repaired and the purpose for Thursday’s repairs was to fix some leaks and help preserve the structure. Baumeister | Abington Journal
