TUNKHANNOCK — A final Summer Fest showing of “The Zookeeper’s Wife” will be presented at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3 at the Dietrich Theater, followed by an opportunity to learn more about one family’s Holocaust story.

Elly Miller, of Shavertown, has her family’s story to tell, a fitting connection to the story of the movie. It is one family’s story of unbelievable tragedy, but also one hope.

In the movie, the wife of the man who ran the Warsaw Zoo manages to save the lives of hundreds during World War II, putting her life and the lives of her family in peril. This movie is based on a true story, showing the heroism of Antonina Zabinski, played by Jessica Chastain, and her husband.

Miller always wondered about the grandparents she never knew as she was told they “died in the war.” As an adult, she had the opportunity to travel to central Europe, including Poland, the country of her grandparents. It was then she learned of the horrors of the Holocaust her grandparents did not survive.

Bit by bit, she was able to piece together information about her grandparents even though many details were missing. She did find that her grandfather and his family are included on the List of the Holy Ones who died during the Holocaust.

Elly Miller’s story is full of hope because the descendents of her grandparents comprise a big, beautiful family. She believes out of this terrible part of history good can come.

Tickets to “The Zookeeper’s Wife” and all Summer Fest films are available at the door or the ticket booth.
