“Jeff Balsom won the second flight with Jack Williams runnerup.
“In the championship flight, Jim Harvey had carded a birdie on the 18th hole to tie Frank Tilley 2d for the championship.
“A special 18 hole playoff was held on Sunday morning with Tilley emerging the victor in a closely contested battle.
“Reggie Richardson and Norm Whitbeck, both of whom have held the Canoe Club Championship on numerous occasions, were co-chairmen of the junior championship matches. These matches are conducted to encourage and foster golf among the children of the Canoe Club members.”
1987 — The Lady Comets tennis team was “off to a winning start,” as stated in a top sports headline that week.
The team defeated its first two opponents, one in exhibition and the other in regular league action.
“Last season the team won the Northeastern Pennsylvania Tennis League championship with a 17-1 overall record and also picked up the Southern Division title,” reads the Journal article.
“Although quite a few seniors were lost from that squad, there are 18 girls on this year’s team, including last season’s District 2 PIAA doubles champions Katherine Nalevanko and Tanya Stavisky.”
Allison Lisk was one of the team’s tri-captains, along with Nalevanko and Stavisky.
