SCRANTON — Lackawanna College staff members recently delivered backpacks filled with school supplies to benefit third-grade students at George Bancroft Elementary School, in what has become an annual back-to-school tradition for both institutions.
The ROCKET Project, which stands for Registrar’s Office Connecting Kids with Educational Tools, began in 2010 with Bancroft Elementary as its pilot school. Since then, the program has expanded to serve students in 20 regional schools. Additional schools are being helped this year through the ongoing generosity of community partners.
In a continuing effort to provide assistance to regional schools, the ROCKET Project also has donated school uniforms and playground equipment. The project also funded playground renovations at Bancroft Elementary in 2014.
Funds for the ROCKET Project are raised primarily through monthly on-campus fundraisers supported by college faculty, staff and local businesses. Lackawanna also received additional donations to benefit the ROCKET Project from Parker Hill Church in August.
For the upcoming year, the ROCKET Project will continue to reach out to surrounding schools to identify their needs.
