SCRANTON — The Lackawanna Historical Society will host a program entitled “The Ice Industry of the Poconos” and presented by area historian Rick Smith at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11 at the society’s headquarters, the Catlin House, 232 Monroe Ave.

Harvesting ice from frozen lakes and ponds seems quaint today, but the industry was once a mainstay of the Pocono plateau. The presentation will cover the ice industry from its inception to demise, and will include video footage from the 1920s.

Smith is a historian from Monroe County. One of his earliest interests was the ice harvesting industry that flourished throughout the Poconos from the late 1800s to the mid-1900s. His father was an ice man, having worked on ice harvests, storage and local deliveries. He passed his knowledge and tools to his son, who then added extensively to the collection throughout the years.
