WAVERLY — During the Fourth of July weekend, a pipe in a water fountain burst on the second floor of Waverly Elementary School, causing damage to the basement, first floor and second floor, according to Abington Heights Superintendent of Schools Michael Mahon.

“A very substantial amount of water spilled,” Mahon said. “Ten to 15 classrooms sustained damage along with many books. We brought in a firm to help with the cleaning and replace carpeting. It was an unfortunate, serious event, but we’re making very good progress and I’m confident we’ll work through it.”

According to Mahon, the district is insured through the Pennsylvania School Boards Association (PSBA).

“We’re putting together a list of things we have lost and we will be placing an order,” Mahon said. “We’re facing a lot of work in July and into August.”
