Kevin Elwell was named Pitcher of the Year in the Landmark Conference in baseball this season. The Elizabethtown junior went 7-0 to beat every team in the league.

Elwell (Abington Heights) finished with a 10-2 record and a 3.27 earned run average. The 6-foot, 170-pound right-hander started 12 games with five complete and two shutouts – 9-0 over Mass Maritime and 12-0 over Drew. In 77 innings, he gave up 73 hits and 32 runs, 28 earned with 18 walks and 38 strikeouts.

For his career, Elwell has an 18-8 record with five shutouts and a 3.29 earned run average in 30 games with 27 starts.

Elwell and the Blue Jays saw the season end in the Landmark tourney. Elwell earned an 18-3 victory over Moravian in the opener May 8 but Elizabethtown had to beat Susquehanna May 9 to earn a bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Crusaders defeated Elwell 4-2 in the first game and then won the title with a 10-4 victory in the second game.

NCAAs for Barrett

Tessa Barrett is just a freshman with the Penn State track team but she’s going to her third NCAA Tournament in her first year.

Barrett (Abington Heights) is seeded seventh in the 5,000 meter run (16:06.19) heading into the East Regionals Thursday in Jacksonville, Florida. The top 12 finishers in each event move onto the NCAA Championships June 8-11 in Eugene, Oregon.

Barrett earned All-American honors with a 38th place finish in the cross country championships last fall and finished 11th in the 5k indoors (16:25.94). She prepped for this year’s NCAA meet by running 10,000 meters for the first time this season and finishing third at the Big Ten Championships May 13-15 in Lincoln, Nebraska.

NCAAs for Ellsworth, too

Senior Lauren Ellsworth will be making her first trip to the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track Championships with the Ashland women’s team.

Ellsworth (Lackawanna Trail), a transfer from Shippensburg, will be competing in the 100 meter dash at the meet, which begins Thursday in Bradenton, Florida. She’s seeded 11th with a time of 11.48.

Ellsworth hit that time when she captured the 100 at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships May 6-8 in Big Rapids, Michigan. She also finished third in the 200 (24.91) and ran a leg on the 4×100 that was third (46.38) to help the Eagles finish fourth in the team standings.

Ellsworth earned All-America honors while at Shippensburg in the distance medley relay in 2012.

Honor for Sebastianelli

Central Connecticut sophomore Anthony Sebastianelli was named to the All-Northeast Conference second team in men’s golf it was announced last week.

Sebastianelli (Abington Heights) wrapped up this past season by finishing eighth in the league championship last month in Daytona Beach, Florida. when he shot 70-72-76—218 to finish five shots behind the medalist.

Sebastianelli was the only Blue Devil to play in every tournament during both the fall and spring season and averaged 74.7 strokes per round. As a freshman, he played 10 rounds and averaged 77.9.

Ware helps Cougars

Senior Cailey Ware and junior Alissa Steier had solid seasons for the Misericordia softball team.

Ware (Abington Heights) hit .330 (31-for-94) with three doubles, 10 RBI and 19 runs scored. The outfielder made just two errors on 44 chances (.955). Freshman Alexa Doggett (Abington Heights) played in 27 games with three starts for the Cougars and hit .185.

Misericordia finished 26-14 after dropping two games in the MAC Freedom Tournament, 4-0 to FDU-Forham and 3-1 to King’s on May 7.

Lesneski keeps busy

Alvernia junior Alicia Lesneski competed in three distance events at the Middle Atlantic Conference Outdoor Track Championships May 5-7 in Reading.

Lesneski (Abington Heights) finished 11th in the 800 meter run in 1:04.37 and 12th in the 10,000 meter run in 44:26.04. In between, she was 29th in the 1,500 meter run in 5:26.26. She was the top finisher for the Crusaders in all three races. The team finished sixth out of 12 colleges with 66 points.
