Abington area sports calendar for the week of May 18

Bike Scranton, ongoing, a free bike share program hosted by the Lackawanna Heritage Valley National and State Heritage Area. Bicyclists can visit one of four share sites in the city (Lackawanna Heritage Valley headquarters, Hilton Scranton and Conference Center, Cedar Bike & Paddle, and the Weinberg Memorial Library at the University of Scranton). Participants must be 18 or older, present a valid driver’s license or ID, and sign a liability waiver to borrow a bike. Helmets are provided. Bikes may be borrowed for a few hours or a full day.

Summit University Golf Classic, May 23 at Glen Oak Country Club, Clarks Summit. Check-in begins at 10 a.m., followed by a lunch at 11 a.m. and shotgun start at noon. A dinner with awards and prize drawings will be held at 5 p.m. The tournament will have a scramble format. Cost: $250. Register: SummitU.edu/golfclassic.

Second annual Kicks for Kids kickball tournament, 10 a.m. June 4 at Scranton High School’s Valor Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Open to teams of all ages. Benefits the United Neighborhood Centers of NEPA’s Project Hope Summer Camp at Camp St. Andrew in Tunkhannock. Teams must have a minimum of ten players. Seventh Annual Forever Young Kids’ Fishing Derby, 9 a.m. to noon (registration at 8 a.m.) June 11 at Hillside Park on Winola Road. Awards and prize raffle presented from noon to 1 p.m. Open to children under age 16, the annual event is held in memory of Bud Young. The first 150 kids to arrive will receive T-Shirts. The event will also feature a rain shelter dedication for the structure built by Eagle Scout Wyatt Sebring, Boy Scout Troop No. 160. Pre-registration is available at the Abington Community Library with a parent’s signature.

Seventh annual Tyler Kubilus 5K Run/Walk, June 11 at Lakeland High School. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., race begins at 9 a.m. All proceeds will benefit the Tyler Kubilus Memorial Scholarship fund. Kubilus died in an ATV accident in 2009. Advanced registration: $20 for adults, $15 for those 17 and under. Same day registration: $25 for adults, $20 for participants 17 or under. The first 100 participants to sign up receive a T-shirt. A Kids Dash around the Lakeland High School track will begin at 10:30 a.m. Cost: $5. Parents can accompany their kids for free.

Keystone/Trout Unlimited Teens Summer Conservation Camp, June 19-25, at Keystone College. Registration is open through May 27 for teens from 14-18 years of age. Students will reside in door rooms and eat in the college cafeteria while learning about conservation, the environment, and the art and sciences of fly fishing. Instructors from the DEP, DCNR, County Conservation Districts and PA Fish and Boat Commission will offer courses in watershed conservation, fish biology, aquatic insects are more. Trout Unlimited volunteers will teach casting, fly tying and matching hatches of insects. The camp will be restricted to 24 participants. Cost: $325, scholarships are available. Heritage Explorer Golf Tournament, June 26 at Pine Hills Country Club in Taylor. Registration begins at 7 a.m. Tee-off at 8 a.m. Captain and crew format. Lunch will be served following an awards ceremony. In addition to 18 holes of golf, there will be live entertainment, contests and door prizes. Cost: $100, $50 for lunch only. Deanna Klingman’s Offensive Skills Girls Basketball Clinic, June 27-July 1, at Abington Heights High School. A morning session will run from 9 to 11:30 a.m. for grades 2-5. Commonwealth Health Regional Hospital of Scranton golf tournament, July 11 at the Country Club of Scranton in Clarks Summit. Proceeds will benefit the Dave Mattei Mission Fund, which provides emergency assistance to Regional Hospital employees in times of personal crisis.
