Abington area sports calendar for the week of Aug. 17, 2016


    Abington Youth Soccer League registration, currently underway for the fall season until Sept. 11. Boys and girls born on or between 8/1/97 and 7/31/12 are eligible to play. Players born 8/1/97 to 7/31/98 must still be in high school this fall to register. There is no residency requirement. Online registration at abingtonyouthsoccer.org requires payment by credit card or e-check. Paper registration is available by printing up a form online and mailing it.     Abington Gators Youth Swim registration, ongoing, practices begin Oct. 3. Fee: $235 ($100 deposit due at registration). There is a $25 discount for each successive child within the same family and the fee includes a team suit, cap and T-shirt. The Abington Gators is a competitive swim league for kids ages 6-14, a member of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Age Group Swim League. A Parent Information Night and Suit Fitting will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Abington Heights High School cafeteria. Register: www.abingtongators.com.

    Factoryville Sportsmen’s Club Sporting Clays course, open Wednesdays 9 a.m. to dusk through September. Member cost: $25 for 100 birds and $13 for 50 birds.     NEPA/Abington Wildcats 16U softball tryouts, 1-3 p.m. Aug. 20 and 21 at Abington Heights High School. The team will attend several college showcase tournaments.     19th Annual Lackawanna Home Builders Association Golf Tournament, 10:30 a.m. Aug. 19 at Pine Hills Country Club in Taylor.     Newton Recreation Center Golf Tournament, 8 a.m. Aug. 20 (registration 7:30 a.m.) at Summit Hills Golf Course, 1235 Country Club Road, Clarks Summit. Fee: $75 per golfer or $300 for a four person team. The fee includes a golf cart, appreciation gift, and a sandwich and beverages on the course.     24th Annual Hook O’Malley 5K Run/Walk against Cancer, 10 a.m. Aug. 21 at McDade Park in Scranton. Registration 8:15-9:45 a.m. Cost: $20 until Aug. 18, then $25. First 50 registrants will receive a T-shirt. Info/register: 570-341-7787. Refreshments will be served after the race and awards will be given in various age groups. The race will be held regardless of the weather.

    Grip It-N-Rip it Fore Riggs Golf Tournament, 10 a.m. Sept. 24 at Scott Greens Golf Club, 455 Green Grove Road, Scott Township. Captain and mate, nine-hole format. The winner will receive a gift card to Dick’s Sporting Goods and a putter. Cost: $40 per golfer and $50 per sponsor. Food and beverages will be provided.
