The Abington Heights Middle School After-School Activity Program begins on Tuesday, Oct. 2, and will run until Thursday, Nov. 8. Students may choose from 40 activities. The registration brochure is available on the Middle School website at www.ahsd.org.
After-School Activities include:
Academics and Technology
Algebra Purple Haze (Thursdays) – Grade 8: Get help on the Algebra purple book from a math expert.
American Sign Language (Wednesdays) – Grades 5,6,7,8: A beginner level class in sign language. Learn to talk with your hands instead of your voice. “See” stories and participate in fun sign language activities. (Class is limited to 12 students).
Debate(Tuesdays) – Grades 7 & 8: Join one of our teachers who will help you to learn to think and speak “on your feet”.
Homework Heroes (Tues., Wed., Thurs.) – Grades 5,6,7,8: Students will have the opportunity to work on homework and get individualized help from our teachers.
Lego League Robotics (Wednesdays) – Grades 6,7,8: Students will be exploring building and programming robots.
Mathcounts (Thursdays) – Grades 6, 7, 8: MATHCOUNTS is a club for students who love math and are not afraid to work hard. Students will work with a university professor on challenging problems and skills in preparation for math competition. MATHCOUNTS is free. Also, if you join MATHCOUNTS, you can have a Tuesday or Wednesday activity for free.
Math Doctor Is In (Tuesdays & Thursdays) – Grades 5, 6: Do you need a prescription for your math anxieties? How about strategies for solving BIG IDEAS and EVERYDAY MATH problems? Schedule an office visit with the Math Doctor. Fifth graders on Tuesdays and sixth graders on Thursdays.
Newspaper Club (Wednesdays) – Grades 5,6,7,8: What’s going on throughout AHMS? No one knows because we don’t have a school newspaper. Come to the AHMS newspaper after school activity and be a part of initiating a school newspaper. You can be the founder, the writer, the photographer or the editor.
Pre-Algebra Blue Lagoon (Wednesdays) – Grade 8: Get help on the Pre-Algebra blue book from a math expert.
Science Olympiad (Tues., Wed., Thurs.) – Grades 5,6,7,8: A science and engineering competition in which students get to “flex their brains” as they participate in 23 exciting events covering the fields of science and engineering, including physics, chemistry, biology, ecology, and mechanical and structural engineering. See the enclosed letter for more information about the team. Science Olympiad is open to all fifth to eighth graders.
TV Studio (Tuesdays and Thursdays) – Grades 5,6,7,8: Are you interested in TV, Movies or Music? Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students interested in the future of our school are invited to join us in the new Visual Communicator Studio to prepare and present morning announcements, special programs and more. Be a part of the “behind the scenes” excitement of our newest Middle School program. Students must commit to two days per week.
Arts, Music and Crafts
Cheer Club (Wednesdays) – Grades 5 & 6: Students will have fun with cheerleading activities.
Craftmaniacs (Wednesdays) – Grades 5,6,7,8: Students will create a T-shirt and many other projects during this fun after school program.
Drama Club (Tuesdays and Wednesdays) – Grades 6, 7, 8: Want to learn about acting? Want to be a star? Be a part of a different world and join this group.
Glee Club (Thursdays) – Grades 5, 6, 7, 8: Sing and perform as a Glee group under the direction of a talented artist.
Jewelry Making (Thursdays) – Grades 5 & 6: This club will introduce you to the fun and creative art of jewelry making. Meet new people and learn how to make some great pieces of personalized jewelry such as beaded bracelets, necklaces, earrings and more. Be sure to sign up soon.
The Memory Box (Wednesdays) – Grades 5 – 8: Document your memories in a fun, creative way with Mrs. Sheehan. Students will use a shoe box as a scrapbook. They will design/paint/collage their shoebox in a creative way. Each week the students will bring in something significant that happened to them that particular week to help recall and document their memories and experiences (movie ticket stub, poem, photo, magazine cutout, etc.) By the end of the session the students will have a beautiful keepsake that they can continue adding to throughout the school year.(Limit 10 students)
Mural Club (Tuesdays and Thursdays) – Grades 5 – 8: Students will work together to paint a colorful mural on the walls of the school. (Limit 10 students)
Plaster Carving (Tuesdays) – Grades 5 – 8: Plaster carving: an introduction to subtractive sculpture. Students will be using sharp utensils to safely carve a block of plaster of Paris. Students in Level 1 will carve an animal head. Students in Level 2 that had Plaster Carving 1 last year (grades 6-8) will carve whole animals. Class limit – ten to twelve students for safety and supply reasons.
Scrapbooking (Wednesdays) – Grades 5,6,7,8: This club is for students that are interested in scrapbooking. All you need to do is bring in lots of photos. Using fun dye cuts, stickers, and layout paper, students will learn many new techniques for scrapbooking.
Rock Band (Thursdays) – Grades 5,6,7,8: Open for drum, bass, guitar, keyboard, singers, or anyone who just wants to rock. Special guest appearances.
Sci Fi Movies (Thursdays) – Grades 7 & 8: “Aliens attack! A meteorite may destroy Earth! Dinosaurs are lurking around the corner! Watch, debate, and discuss the greatest sci-fi movies in history! We promise popcorn, scares, suspense, and a great time! Note to parents: Although no R rated movies will be shown, some PG and PG-13 movies will be shown that may contain intense sci-fi action scenes.
Sports, Games and Other Fun Activities
Chess/Checkers Club (Wednesdays) – Grades 5,6,7,8: Are you the best chess/checkers player in school? Come test your strategies and skills against other students and have fun while doing it. Beginner, intermediate, and advanced players are ALL welcome.
Field Hockey (Tuesdays and Wednesdays) – Grades 5, 6, 7, 8: Students will learn the fundamentals of the sport and have tons of fun on the field! Weather permitting! Students MUST bring shin guards and mouth guards in order to participate. Other equipment will be provided.
Fishing Club (Tuesdays)– Grades 5.6,7,8: “FISH ON!” – If you love fishing or want to learn, this club is for you. Learn how to tie a hook, cast a line, and learn the secrets of catching fish.
Flag Football (Thursdays) – Grades 6,7,8: Students will participate in a flag football team activity.
Fundamental Basketball Skills (Tuesdays) – Grades 7 & 8: This after-school activity is dedicated to focus on various drills that will help improve each player’s fundamental skills. The skills that will be focused on during this session will be footwork, ball handling, passing, shooting form, and defense.
Geocaching (Wednesdays) – Grades 6,7,8: Geocaching can be described as a high-tech treasure hunt. Using Global Positioning System technology, students will try to find all types of containers that are hidden around the middle school campus. Students will learn to use G.P.S. devices as they solve puzzles, unravel hidden clues, and explore the woods in pursuit of these “caches”. Weather permitting.
Juggling Genius (Tuesdays & Wednesdays) – Grades 5,6,7,8: Students work with our own resident expert to learn juggling skills.
Kickball (Thursdays) – Grades 5, 6, 7, 8:Come have fun playing the classic game. Bring clothes and sneakers that will get very dirty. Weather permitting.
Lego Club (Tuesdays) – Grades 5,6,7,8: This is an activity for Lego enthusiasts. Learn from each other’s experiences with Lego creations. See how creative you can become.
Mixed Bag (Tuesdays and Wednesdays) – Grades 5,6: This activity will consist of a variety of athletic sporting events (weather permitting). On rainy days, Educational Fun Games will be played.
Open Gym Basketball (Thursdays)- Grades 5 & 6: Participate in fast action pick-up basketball games that are full of fun and a great way to meet new friends.
Ping Pong (Wednesdays) – Grades 5, 6, 7, 8: Are you as good as Forrest Gump? Whether you are a beginning or an advanced player, this activity is for you. Tournaments will be occurring.
Rescue 911 (Tuesdays) – Grades 5, 6, 7, 8: Learn about first aid, responding to emergencies, safety procedures while having fun.
Running Club (Wednesdays) – Grades 5, 6, 7, 8: Running and conditioning with friends.
Tennis (Tuesdays or Thursdays) – Grades 5,6,7,8: Learn how to be a tennis player while meeting new people and having fun. This highly energetic club will improve your backhand in only six weeks. Tuesdays: Skill & Drill Tennis (beginners); Thursdays: Play and Tournament (more advanced tennis).
Ultimate Frisbee (Tuesdays) – Grades 5, 6, 7, 8: Have fun playing a great team game. Weather permitting.
Walking Healthy Club (Wednesdays) – Grades 5,6,7,8: Talk to your friends while walking yourself healthy.
X-Box 360 (Tuesdays) – Grades 5, 6: You are the controller. Let loose and get your energy out by playing Kinect on X-Box. We will play Kinect Sports, KinectAdventures, & Dance Central. Get it in to win it.
Yoga (Tues. & Thurs.) – Grades 5, 6, 7, 8: Exercise to strengthen your mental-physical health as well as your happiness.
