Avondale Mining Disaster remembrance set for Sept. 1 in Scranton

A community observance of the 143rd anniversary of the Avondale mine disaster will take place on Saturday, Sept. 1, at 2:30 p.m. at the Washburn Street Cemetery, Scranton.

Sixty-one of the victims are buried in the cemetery, and many of their gravestones were recently restored and historical markers were installed near their resting places.

The ceremony will include a color guard, taps, a gun salute, reflections, speakers, music, and mining displays and actors.

The event is sponsored by the St. David's Society, Friends of the Forgotten, the Old Forge Mining Group, the Anthracite Living History Group, and the Anthracite Heritage Foundation, with a coordinating role played by The North American Festival of Wales.

The public is invited at attend at no cost and is encouraged to bring folding chairs. Light refreshments will be provided.
