The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution announces this year's American History Essay Contest and the Tunkhannock Chapter (DAR) encourages students in grades 5, 6, 7 and 8 in a public, private or parochial school or those who are home schoolers to participate.

This year the title of the essay is Forgotten Patriots Who Supported the American Struggle for Independence.

Many people helped win our battle for Independence during the Revolutionary War so the focus is on the often unrecognized people and groups, including African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanics and others who provided military, patriotic and public service in support of the American Revolution. Students are asked to describe a particular person or group and how they supported the cause for American Independence and explain why it is especially important to honor them.

Deadline is December 7. They encourage all students to participate. Recognition and monetary awards will be presented by the Tunkhannock Chapter DAR in February 2013.
