Lackawanna County will soon realize that ??Rock & Roll? lives on. Especially Saturday, Sept. 15, with the ??Battle of the Bands? from 3 to 5 p.m. on the Linden Street side of Courthouse Square.

This free concert is being organized by Lackawanna County, the University of Scranton and Scranton Tomorrow.

The purpose of the event is to provide a musical festival for college student bands, generate traffic for central city businesses, and create a venue for students from different schools to get together.

The ??Battle? was an outgrowth from comments generated from a 2011 survey of students from eight Lackawanna County colleges and universities. The questionnaire touched-on off-campus spending, downtown patronage and a need for more musical events and activities for a collegiate audience.

Courthouse Square is the perfect venue due to the numerous concerts staged there by the county??s arts and culture department.

A variety of dinner specials are being organized for the event along with other amenities. Aside from the music and fun, a panel of judges will select one lucky band to win the ??Battle??s? $500 cash prize.

The bands performing are: Days in Transit - Marywood University; RISE - Baptist Bible College; Sage Grass Drifters - Johnson College; Silhouette Lies - University of Scranton; The Future Calling - Lackawanna College; Stevie J. and the Shine Men - The Commonwealth Medical College; and Kids in a Sandbox - Keystone College.
