Have you ever wondered how local history fits into American history as a whole?

Local historian Dr. Sheldon Spear will delve into that topic at the Dietrich Theater on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.

According to Spear, “Many historically important things happened right here in northeastern Pennsylvania.”

During this lecture, he will explore frontier warfare that occurred in the region before and during the American Revolution, anthracite-based industrialization, the growth of the labor movement and other events and developments that affected America’s history.

Spear has authored several books on local history including Chapters in Wyoming Valley History (1989), Wyoming Valley History Revisited (1994), Chapters in Northeastern Pennsylvania History (1994) and Daniel J. Flood: a Biography – the Congressional Career of an Economic Savior and Cold War Nationalist (2008).

Spear received his bachelor’s degree in political science from Brooklyn College, his master’s degree in history from Syracuse University and his Ph.D. in history from New York University. He taught history for several years at Luzerne County Community College before retiring. He has also given several informative talks at the Dietrich over the years on local history topics such as mining and conflicts in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Admission to the lecture “Northeastern Pennsylvania in American History” is free of charge. For more information, contact the Dietrich Theater at 570.996.1500.
