Cory Spangenberg closed out June with a home run, giving him four for the month and eight for the season while playing for the Memphis Redbirds, the Triple-A team that is the top minor league affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Spangenberg’s homer accounted for the only Memphis run in a 5-1 loss to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp June 30.
The 2009 Abington Heights graduate took a .215 season average into the July 4 game after striking out seven times while going 0-for-10 in the first three games of the month. He had 27 RBI and nine stolen bases in 74 games.
Spangenberg is a .294 hitter in 588 career Minor League games. He also has batted .254 in 419 career games over six Major League seasons in addition to spending two years playing on the Major League level in Japan.
Memphis is third out of 10 teams in the International League West with a 43-35 record.
