TUNKHANNOCK — That great western author Louis L’Amour said, “Start writing no matter what. The water does not flow until the faucet is turned on.”
The Dietrich Theater Writers’ Group will give area writers, ages 18 and above, that chance beginning Wednesday, Sept. 14. The group is returning to weekly meetings after a two-year hiatus due to shutdowns from the pandemic. Founding Dietrich Theater Executive Director Hildy Morgan will once again be facilitating the group.
Previous publication is not necessary. All levels of writing and all genres (fiction, non-fiction, playwriting, screenwriting, poetry, etc.) are welcome. Participants will learn the craft of writing as they write toward a goal of personal fulfillment or beyond, to publication. Members will receive and give writing critiques in order to improve the form and content of their writing.
Hildy invites, “If you love to read and you would like to write, it’s a safe place for people who love words and would like to polish their use of them.”
In addition to critiques, writers will have opportunities to explore their creativity each week by doing a few minutes of prompt generated writing to warm up their “instrument.” Brenda Fager, Dietrich Theater Intern and MFA student in the Wilkes University Creative Writing graduate program, is thrilled to serve as co-facilitator of the group. Brenda shares what Victoria Christopher Murray, co-author of The Personal Librarian, shared with her and other Wilkes University creative writing students on writing a first draft, “If your first draft isn’t ugly, you’re doing it wrong!” Come write that first ugly draft, or take it to the next levels, including ready for the eyes of a publisher.
The Writer’s Group will meet on Wednesday afternoons from 1 to 3 p.m. beginning on Sept. 14 through Dec. 14 excluding Nov. 23. Admission is free and open to adults ages 18 and above. To register, call 570-836-1022 ext#3. The first meeting will cover the group’s guidelines and a “get to know the writers” with a couple of writing prompts. Bring paper, notebooks, journals, wherever you write (even laptops), your favorite writing implement and your creativity.
