Lackawanna Historical Society sets fall genealogy forum meeting schedule and beginners’ workshop

SCRANTON — The Lackawanna Historical Society is pleased to announce its Fall Genealogy Forum Schedule. The Forum was created in late 2019 to provide LHS members and local residents who are interested in tracing their ancestry with an opportunity to come together to share experiences and provide helpful hints to others who are seeking their roots. The Forum, which was planned to be a monthly in-person meeting, soon went virtual due to the COVID-19 shut down. A group of 15-20 members tuned into Zoom each month to discuss research methods and useful techniques for finding public records, searching for cemeteries, and using online sources.

In-person meetings resumed this past Spring with a focus on searching for records of European Ancestors in their native countries. This theme continues with the upcoming meetings listed below:

• Tracing English/Welsh Ancestors presented by Tom Price. Wednesday, Sept. 14, 1 p.m. at the Valley Community Library, 739 River St., Peckville

• Tracing German Ancestors presented by Tom Price. Wednesday, Oct. 12, 1 p.m. at the North Pocono Public Library, 1315 Church St., Moscow

• Tracing Polish Ancestors presented by Kate Bohan. Nov. 9, 1 p.m., the Abington Community Library, 1200 W. Grove St., Clarks Summit

These meetings are free and open to the public but space is limited so participants are asked to register by calling 570-344-3841or emailing lackawannahhistory@gmail.com. Participants should also bring a laptop, not tablet for each session.

In addition to the regular Forum meetings, the Lackawanna Historical Society, in partnership with the Albright Memorial Library, will be hosting a Fall Genealogy Workshop for Beginners on Saturdays, Oct. 8, 15, 22, and 29, 2022, from 9:30 a.m. to Nnoon in the Henkelman Room at the Albright Library, 500 Vine St., Scranton. Registration is required and participants must commit to all four sessions. The fee is $25 for LHS Members and $35 for Non-Members. The deadline is Friday, Sept. 30, 2022. Please call or email the society for details.

The Society is excited to continue this program and work in partnership with all of the county libraries. It’s an excellent way to promote local history, reach new audiences and help individuals learn more about their past.

Pharoahs Car Club of Scranton and Countryside Community Church partner to host Smiles for Mikey car show and craft fair

The Pharoahs Car Club of Scranton is excited to announce The Smiles For Mikey Car Show & Craft Fair scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022. Countryside Community Church (14011 Orchard Drive, (Newton), Clarks Summit) has graciously agreed to host this event. which is open to everyone in NEPA. This celebration of cars and crafts is being held to raise funds for the Smiles for Mikey Campaign. Mikey Budzinski is a Clifford Township resident who lives with Muscular Dystrophy. Due to mobility issues, Mikey’s independence is only possible by using a motorized wheelchair. For the last several months, friends, family, and neighbors have been raising money to help the family purchase a wheelchair accessible van. Without such a vehicle, Mikey was only able to use his motorized wheelchair while school was in session. On evenings, weekends, and school holidays, Mikey’s wheelchair had to be left behind at the school because the family did not have a way to transport it. The family has finally been able to take delivery of a wheelchair accessible vehicle, but they still owe a significant amount of money before they are able to own it, completely. A portion of the vehicle registration, vendor fees, and food sales from this event will go directly towards paying down a portion of the outstanding balance for this van.

All vehicles (classic cars, customs, motorcycles, or just well-loved, two or four-wheeled machines) are welcome to attend the Sept. 17 event. Pre-registration costs $10 per vehicle and is available at tinyurl.com/3zj395kr. On-site registration, paid the day of the event, will be $15 per vehicle. All vehicles in attendance will be judged for one of three different awards. Everyone in attendance will have the option of voting for a People’s Choice Award. Mikey Budzinski, honorary Master of Ceremonies, will choose his favorite to receive the Mikey’s Choice Award. And, the Pharoahs Car Club of Scranton will choose their favorite, based on traditional car judging criteria, for the Pharoahs’ Choice Award.

Ten by ten-foot Vendor spaces are available at a cost of $30 each and can be reserved at tinyurl.com/2x5ma6e.

Countryside Community Church will offer refreshments for sale in their on-site pavilion.

For more information, to pre-register a vehicle or to reserve a vendor space by phone, please contact Beth Kostelnik, Chaplain, Pharoahs Car Club of Scranton at 484-333-6602 or ekostelnik@susumc.org.
