This month at the Gathering Place:
Rotary Food Drive
The Abington Rotary Club will hold a drive-by food drive to benefit the Open Door Food Pantry located on the side of the Clarks Summit Borough Building. This food pantry is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week to anyone needing food. It is run by The Gathering Place. The need this year has been especially great.
The Rotarians will be stationed at the side of the Borough Building from 10 to 12 on Thursday, April 6, for anyone dropping off donations.
People donating who cannot make this time may leave donations in the lobby of the PS Bank in Gerrity’s Plaza.
Donations should include non-perishable food and personal hygiene items. Always needed are cereal, juices, canned or packaged fruits and vegetables, Peanut butter and jelly, flour, sugar, coffee, tea, any condiments, Hygiene products, tooth brushes, toothpaste, tacos and tortillas, pasta and sauce, Boost or Endure, diapers, adult diapers, tuna or chicken in can, Sloppy Joe mix.

• DNA Discoveries: Introduction to Genetic Genealogy, 6:30 p.m. on April 13. Historical researcher Julie Manwarren will present on the difference that DNA testing is making on the world of genetic geology with results that can help build your family tree. • Identity Theft: 7 p.m. on April 12. Penn State instructors will teach how to protect your identity, monitor your accounts, and respond promptly to stay financially safe. Cost $10.
• Gifford Pinchot, the People’s Governor: Noon on April 11. Gary Ryman will discuss his books about the two terms of Pinchot as PA governor and the role of his wife in her husband’s work. He will detail why these 8 years were so important to PA history. Cost $5.
• Paul Revere: Fact and Fiction: Noon on April 13. The poem about Revere’s midnight ride might have stretched the truth, but his inventions, wartime activities and home life showed he was truly an American hero. Cost: $5.
• Lawn Alternatives: Native and Pollinator Friendly Solutions, noon on April 6. Lawn care can present issues with time, expense and frustration. Penn State Master Gardener Bob Davis will offer answers to reduce traditional lawn with plants that support a natural habitat, reduce labor and cost. Options range from beds to borders to meadows to replacement.
• Game Night: 6 to 9 p.m. on April 21. Come on out and have a good time and make memories with family and friends.
• Memory Cafe: 10 a.m on April 14 and April 28. People with memory loss and their care companions can visit, share refreshments, art, music, or just enjoy the company. Free.
• Gluten-Free Baking: 6 p.m. on April 17. Chef Donna Vannan will explore gluten free baking, which flours are best, and will have samples of best options for cakes and pastries. Cost: $35.
• Crochet a Floppy Spring Hat: 6:30 p.m. April 18, April 25 and May 2. Kristina Laurito will teach how to crochet with thicker materials to make a boho style hat perfect for spring. Topics: crocheting hat base in the round, crocheting a lace pattern, and methods of hat shaping and blocking. Cost $40 and supply fee
• History of What we Eat: Noon to 1:30 p.m. April 20. Ann Vitale’s deep research provides a fast-paced lecture covering the impact of transportation, commercialization, wars, packaged food. Did supply or demand come first and what happened to seasonal eating? She will provide answers Cost: $5.
• DNA Discoveries: Ancestry DNA and Intro to the Leeds Method, 6:30 p.m. on April 20. Julie Manwarren will teach how to read Ancestry DNA results, utilize the tools and resources that Ancestry requires and give an overview. of the Leeds method for genetic genealogical family tree building.
