ARCHBALD – Donna Maria Groysman always enjoyed baking and thought about opening a bakery.
She took the plunge and opened Queen of Tarts Desserts a year ago. It is located at 452 N. Main St., Archbald. People come not only from the Abington’s but from all over the area to enjoy the bakery’s baked goods.
She had purchased the building and did not intend to open a full-time bakery. She had planned to use the building for a larger commercial kitchen space to accommodate cake orders.
She explained how her dream to open a bakery came into reality.
“Baking and decorating became a hobby for me about 10 years ago while working a corporate job,” she said. “Over the years, the business grew and so did my skills which were all self-taught and through trial and error. I found a part of me that I didn’t know existed. Just over a year ago I felt it was time to choose between my full-time job and taking a leap of faith as a business owner. Ultimately, I chose the latter and here I am.”
People can come into the bakery, sit and relax and have baked goods and a cup of coffee. Queen of Tarts Desserts has a full espresso bar along with iced and hot beverages. A person can create their own flight if they can’t decide on one of the flavors being offered.
The bakery offers 25 specialty cake flavors. In addition, the bakery offers custom cakes that are tailored to the individual, their event and their theme.
Almond Joy cake is made with a coconut cake with dark chocolate ganache filling and coconut butter cream, banana cake with cream cheese frosting, banana split cake with banana cake with chocolate ganache filling and vanilla butter cream, cherries and sprinkles. Cannoli cake is made with cinnamon cake with cannoli filling and covered in mini chocolate chips.
There is also jelly thumbprint cake made with a white almond cake with raspberry filling and almond buttercream and topped with jelly thumbprint cookies, and Nutter Butter cake made with vanilla cake with peanut butter buttercream and topped with Nutter Butter cookies ganache and topped with Reese’s are just some of the 25 specialty cakes offered.
“We never design two cakes the same that are custom even if they are the same theme because I feel they should be exactly that custom to that specific customer,” Groysman said. “I guess I always felt that a cake wouldn’t be as special if someone had the same exact cake. We hold ourselves to a very high standard of Queen of Tarts Desserts, and I pride myself on our originality in the bakery and the items we offer.”
The bakery also sells cinnamon buns, apple turnovers, cheesecake, cookies and brownies and lemon bar among other items.
Customers can also choose from seven flavors of gelato which are also offered in wedding packages. There are also ice cream sundaes.
“I have savored the cinnamon buns, apple turnovers, cannoli, macarons, fruit tarts, pecan bar, slice of cheesecake and several decadent cupcakes in varied flavors. The Queen herself is so creative and innovative. She excels at presentations, A delight for several senses,” said costumer Catherine Alu.
The bakery has held events at Constantino’s in Clarks Summit and has several more coming up. They will be doing a wedding display setup which is a favorite event to do. A full display setup is where she designs the customers entire dessert table with linens, centerpieces, florals and desserts that integrate with the color scheme or design of the event.
“Queen of Tarts has heard that Clarks Summit is the place to be around the holidays. There are various fall and winter festivals that Clarks Summit does every year that we had an interest in attending. We plan on attending all of them with our mobile dessert bar. In the winter, we plan on offering a full hot cocoa bar,” Groysman said.
The bakery hosts cupcake decorating classes for kids. It also recently offered a sip and succulent painting class at Maiolotesi and Peaches and Green Greenhouse. These events are held quarterly. In addition, the bakery opens its venue to be rented for bridal showers, birthdays or any other smaller event with under 50 guests.
The Queen of Tarts Desserts recently purchased a trailer to take the baked goods on the road.
“The best part about our trailer is we can offer a wide range of treats based on the season as well as all our normal storefront offerings. We recently had our first summer wedding with the mobile dessert bar, and we did gelato because of the heat. We plan on changing it up what we offer based on the event and time of the season,” said Groysman.
Groysman explained what she likes about the bakery.
“I enjoy the dynamic of being around my team and being in my own element, inside a space I built all my own through hard work. I mention this element because I think that is so important to have a good relationship with your employees and create a fun, but focused work environment. The bakery itself was an interior and exterior full renovation that took so much heart and soul to complete. The sight of the bakery and my regular customers waiting at the door for me makes me smile every day single day. It’s truly indescribable in words what it means to me.”
