Champions were crowned in the Mixed Doubles and 50 and Over Singles events this weekend at Scranton Tennis Club.
Top-seeded Dan Fowler outsteadied James Linder 6-2, 6-3 to take the 50 and Over Singles crown. In semifinal action Fowler blanked John Sinclair 6-0, 6-0, while Linder surprised defending champion Phil Mercurio, winning 6-4, 4-6, (10-8) in a well-contested semifinal.
In the Mixed Doubles-A Division final Johnny Sinclair’s quickness at the net and Grace Lennox’s steadiness from the baseline enabled them to defeat Doug Klamp and Camilla Rinaldi 6-3, 6-4. Sinclair and Lennox were victorious over Phil Mercurio and Jody Jackman 6-2, 6-3 in one semifinal, while Klamp and Rinaldi eliminated John Lucas and Chris Lange 6-2, 6-2.
Top-seeded Jerry Hahn and Joan Davis took the Mixed Doubles-B Division crown with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Kevin Vinson and Arpana Asawa. Earlier Vinson and Asawa ousted Corey and Liz McNulty 6-2, 6-0, while Hahn and Davis reached the finals with a 7-6(5), 6-3 win over Jonah Cahn and Amishi Amit in a two-hour contest with a number of long rallies.
Jodi Manello and Connie Weiss had a very competitive match in the Women’s 50 and Over Singles final, with Manello winning 6-4, 4-6, (10-7).
The Mixed A Doubles consolation championship went to William and Kelly Arp as they won the family challenge by rebounding to defeat Josh and Susan Arp 2-6, 6-3, (10-8). William and Kelly advanced to the final with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Harrison Kubilus and Jodi Manello.
There is one title left to be decided. Corey and Liz McNulty will take on George Buckbee and Becca Braunsdorf in the Mixed Doubles- B Division consolation final tomorrow at 6 pm. Buckbee and Braunsdorf defeated Joe Pulman and Katrina Ricci 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the final.
