Nicholson will celebrate the 108th anniversary of the Nicholson Bridge, also known as the Tunkhannock Viaduct, on Sunday, Sept. 10 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

It will take place on Main Street off Route 92. While you are enjoying the activities on Main Street you can marvel at the gigantic structure of the Nicholson Bridge which after 108 years still supports the long modern freight trains, and if you are lucky, you will see one passing over the bridge that day.

Morning activities will start at 9 a.m. with a flag salute presented by the local Girl Scout Troop No. 50075, followed by Irene Damiano singing the national anthem and Wyoming County Commissioner Ernie King welcoming everyone. The D.J. will be Rick Hiduk providing music and announcements during the day. At 10am Phoebe Snow and her Conductor will talk about the old railroad days when trains were the major source of transportation.

From 10 a.m. to noon the Airport Pickers, a local band, will provide live music in front of the office. At 11 a.m. a delicious chicken barbaque served by the ladies of the Nicholson Women’s Club will be available until sold out. The Women’s Club also has a great basket raffle going throughout the day. The drawing will be at 3 p.m.; you do not have to be present for the drawing.

Main Street will be lined with over 60 vendors offering a variety of products such as crafted items, antiques, jewelry, honey, and different food.

Afternoon activities will include at noon the students from the Mountain View Highschool Band under the baton of band director Mason Stiver playing traditional and familiar tunes. They will be followed by a young group of dancers: the Library Club Dancers. Phoebe Snow and her conductor will do a presentation at 1:30 p.m. followed by Whipples Dance Studio from Tunkhannock at 2 p.m.

There will be children’s games and it should be a great day for the whole family to enjoy. You will also be able to visit the newly restored D&L Railroad Station which will be open on Nicholson Bridge Day and can provide historical information.

The event is handicap accessible and organized by the Nicholson Women’s Club. For information call 570-942-6747 or 570-942-4622
