CLARKS SUMMIT — Top-seeded Jamie Mamera ended the successful run of unseeded William Arp, taking the Men’s A Singles title with a 6-4, 6-4 win in the Lackawanna County Open tennis tournament at Scranton Tennis Club.
After winning a very competitive first set, Mamera appeared on his way to an easy victory, taking a 3-0 lead in the second set, but Arp rallied to take a 4-3 lead. However he failed to win his serve and lost the final three games of the match. Arp had earlier knocked out 4th-seeded Will Cohen and 2nd-seeded Luke Kotcho. He was a PIAA District 2 doubles champion this past spring.
In Women’s A Singles Emma Cuck was ill and unable to play, so she defaulted to Susan Arp. She and Arp were also in the Women’s B Doubles final and had to default to Chris Lange and Nicole Sinclair.
The B Singles finals were both very competitive matches. The Women’s B Singles title went to Mia Bovani, who outlasted Arpana Asawa 7-5, 1-6, (10-5). Harrison Kubilus took the Men’s B Singles crown with a 4-6, 6-0, (10-3) win over Kevin Vinson.
William Arp returned in the Men’s A Doubles final, paired with his Abington Heights teammate Liam Farrell. They got off to a good start, winning the first set 6-4, before losing the 2nd set 6-4 and the tiebreaker 10-6 to Luke Kotcho and Carlo Possanza. The match had a number of amazing exchanges, with many outstanding retrievals and reflex volleys.
In the Men’s B Doubles final Jake and Nick Antolick’s rally from 0-5 in the second set just fell short as they lost 6-3, 6-4 to Ryan Wolford and Paul Merkel. The Women’s B Doubles was a round robin, won by Julia Bergman and Elsie Phillips. They defeated Kate Minella and Mia Bovani 6-1, 6-1 yesterday to finish undefeated. Liz and Molly McNulty finished in second place.
John Weiss was the tournament chairman, assisted by Burt Reese, Joe McNulty, Kathleen McKenna, and a number of club members who helped to get the courts ready after each match.
