Christmas is approaching soon. Malls are getting crowded. Homes are getting lit up and decorated with holiday lights. Christmas music is being played on the radio. The magic of the season is upon us. The Abington area once again celebrates the season with many holiday happenings.

The Abington Business & Professional Association kicked off the festivities by sponsoring its annual tree lighting on State Street in Clarks Summit on Saturday, Nov. 22. Council president Gerrie Carey was suited up as Mrs. Claus and John Worobey donned his Santa getup. The Wally Gordon Singers led a sing-along. The Abington Heights Civic League Dance Academy performed seasonal routines. Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived in style by firetruck to let people get their pictures taken with them. Mrs. Claus led the countdown to light the tree and the town. People enjoyed fresh cider and donuts.

The town of Factoryville will have its annual Christmas Market at Christy Mathewson Park on the weekend of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Dec. 5 to Dec. 7. It is a German Christkindl-inspired market with artisan vendors, festive food, and holiday beverages. Food trucks include Next Level Food Truck, Sauced & Smoked, Lupo Rosso Woodfired Pizza, The Welsh Tea Shoppe, and Murray’s Coffee Shack. Creekside Cafe and Country Kitchen by Bre will also provide sustenance. Hatchet Jack will offered its barbecued foods on Friday only. Factoryville Little League will operate a concession stand on Saturday and Sunday.

Everything Natural will continue the Christmas fun with an Annual Holiday Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6. Moka Origins from Honesdale will offer a wide variety of organic chocolates. Santa will arrive at noon and stick around until 2 p.m. Mark Woodyat will play music incorporating classical tunes with holiday themes. The staff of Everything Natural will compete in a cookie contest, where they will offer free samples of their holiday cookies to customers who will vote for their favorite one. Emilia McCormick from USA Tiny Tumblers will be hosting story time for her brand new children’s book, “Mikey Goes to the Park,” from noon to 1 p.m. Following each storytime session, there will be group playtime with USA Tiny Tumblers, which will include an obstacle course for children to explore.

The Newton Recreation Center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, will feature 30 vendors, unique holiday gifts, and baked goods. Santa will make an appearance at the NRC North Pole. Pictures can be taken with him.

From Dec. 12 to 14, Servant Church of the Abingtons will feature its annual Live Nativity. Across the church’s parking lot, an outdoor setting with live animals will feature live animals and church members reenacting the birth of Jesus. It will be directed by Sam Corey. Sarah Jayne will be choreographing the dancing angels. Brian Slaven will play the angel Gabriel. The audience will get to warm up inside the church with cookies baked in the fellowship hall. Friday and Saturday shows will be performed at 6 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday’s show will be at 6 p.m.

Clarks Summit United Methodist Church will have a free performance of The Wally Gordon Community Singers presenting a show called Holiday Magic: Lights, Laughter, & Love. Hillside Haven Community Church will have its annual Christmas Eve candlelight service on Dec. 24.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will ride in the firetruck from Factoryville Fire Company and make an appearance at the tree lighting at 7 p.m. Friday . WNEP meteorologist Jeremy Lewan will flip the switch to light the tree. Live music will be played by John Bower on Friday evening; and Jay Travis, the Lackawanna Trail School Choir, and Johnny Dee on Saturday afternoon. Elf School will be stationed at a tent near the basketball court, where kids can meet Santa and Mrs. Claus. Kids can draw and write letters to Santa. They can also make reindeer food with oatmeal and glitter. There will also be Storytime for kids as well as a selfie apparatus with props. Laura’s Hope Rescue will give away stuffed animals that are donated by PetSmart.

There you have it. The Abington area is getting in the Christmas spirit with many upcoming events. Merry Christmas! Yule love it!
