The 34th annual Paul “Hook” O’Malley 1 Mile Firecracker Run/Walk Race Against Cancer will be held Sunday, Aug. 16, at 707 N. South Road, Scranton.
The race is in memory of Paul “Hook” O’Malley, “who believed in the spiritual, emotional, and physical health of the youth within his community,” according to the press release.
This year’s race will be run in memory of Jim Moran, a longtime Clarks Green Resident. Moran was involved in the previous 33 “Hook” O’Malley races against cancer. He was also a past president of Scranton Organized area runners, was on the Steamtown Marathon committee, and was active in the running community by volunteering at many other events. He also ran numerous marathons across the country.
Moran will be honored by having this year’s first-place overall male and female awards named after him.
Registration for this year’s race will be from 8:15 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., with the race starting promptly at 10 a.m. Pre-registration is $20 until Aug. 14, and on the day of the race, registration is $25. The registration fee is $10 for any junior/senior high school track and cross-country student runners ages 12 to 19.
All donations will benefit the American Cancer Society.
