SCRANTON — Aishi Asawa and Alfred Betts captured titles in the annual Junior Tennis Tournament at the Scranton Tennis Club.
Asawa surprised top-seeded Jonathan Cohen 6-3, 4-6, 10-3 to take the 14 and Under Singles crown, while unseeded Betts upset top-seeded Matthew Cohen 6-4, 6-2 to take the 18 and Under Singles title.
Betts played #3 singles last year for Holy Cross HS, while Cohen was the #1 player for Scranton Prep.
In 14 and Under semifinal action, Asawa defeated defending champion Jennifer Azzarelli 6-3, 7-5, while Cohen edged out Jessica Azzarelli 6-1, 4-6, (11-9). In the consolation final Jane Grad defeated Graham Cottell 6-4, 6-1.
Betts defeated Adithi Velaga 6-2, 6-1 to reach the final, while Cohen ousted Kate Arp 6-3, 7-5.
Amishi Amit, District 2 doubles champion from Abington Heights in 2025, took the consolation title by defeating Scranton High’s Tom Bergman in a tight match, 4-6, 6-3, (10-4).
Kelly Arp and Nicole Sinclair were the tournament directors.
