SCRANTON — Organ virtuoso, composer and audio-video producer/engineer Frederick Hohman, D.M.A., will once again bring his talents to The University of Scranton when he appears “In Recital” on Sunday, March 5. The performance will begin at 3 p.m. in the university’s Houlihan-McLean Center, Jefferson Avenue and Mulberry Street.

Admission is free and the event is open to the public.

Hohman will perform on the university’s historic 107-year-old Austin Opus 301 organ, which was re-dedicated in 2006 after being completely dismantled, rebuilt and restored. The 3,178-pipe, 45-rank, 4-manual instrument was built in 1910 by the Austin Organ Company of Hartford, Connecticut, and exists today as one of a small number of surviving examples of intact and original symphonic organs from the transitional period between the turn of the century and World War I.

A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Hohman has presided over the inauguration of some of America’s largest and most noteworthy new and restored pipe organs. Since he began touring in 1984, Hohman has appeared as a guest organ recitalist at churches, cathedrals, universities and music festivals throughout the world, including appearances in the Caribbean, United Kingdom, Finland and Australia. He has also served as producer/engineer on more than 150 Pro Organo recordings, and as producer/host/performer on more than two dozen episodes of the television/home video series, “Midnight Pipes,” as well as appearing on numerous episodes of American Public Media’s “Pipe Dreams.”

Hohman earned a performer’s certificate, bachelor’s degree in music, master’s degree in music and a doctorate of musical arts, all in organ performance, at the Eastman School of Music. He is distinguished as the only student to have ever taken all available degrees at the Eastman School while remaining in the organ studio of the legendary David Craighead.

When not on tour with concerts or recordings, Hohman works in his music studio, where he practices on a D280 C. Bechstein piano, and a Hauptwerk-converted, 1927-vintage, 4-manual Austin organ console.
