1967 — A cornerstone laying ceremony was held for a local church’s new building.

“The congregation of the Clarks Summit United Methodist Church met Sunday for the last time in the old building on Center Street,” read a Journal brief.

“Final preparations are now being completed in the new church on the Morgan Highway for the first sermon to be held in the sanctuary, Sunday, July 2 at 10 a.m.

“…Rev. Burtt Sweet, pastor, will deliver the sermon.

“His subject will be “These Doors Open to God.”

1977 — Abington area residents said good bye to two long-time friends as they moved away on a new adventure.

“Although there is nothing unusual about people moving in or out of Clarks Summit, when the ones leaving are a 98-year old mother and her daughter, a retired librarian, on their way to a new job and residence in Allen Park, Mich., that is different,” read the Journal story.

“Recently Lorena Waggoner, who celebrated her 98th birthday on April 19, and Miriam Waggoner left their home at 304 Maple Ave. in the Lansdowne area to begin their trip to Michigan via Allegheny Flight 281.

“Miriam Waggoner is going to the Detroit Divinity School, a newly established seminary, to help set up their library. The two ladies will live in the Intercity Baptist Church complex.

“The Waggoners came to Clarks Summit in July 1968 when Baptist Bible College moved to the area. At that time, Miss Waggoner was head librarian of the college from which she retired in 1974.”
