Laura Moeller has always had a passion for baking.

The 2013 Abington Heights graduate remembers helping her mom, Barbara, and dad, Eric, making cookies around the holidays when she was just 4 years old.

“I got an early start,” she said.

Moeller has continued to hone her craft over the years and recently won several awards at the Northeast Fair in Pittston.

“My love and interest in baking has grown over the years,” she said. “I got more into it as time went on. I’m really proud of myself. I’ve gone from making plain cookies to doing elaborate pies. It’s been kind of fun to watch myself grow. I looked at the photo album of my work on Facebook and just said, ‘Wow.’”

Moeller won a first-place Blue Ribbon and Best in Show for her blueberry pie.

She also received a first-place Blue Ribbon for her chocolate chip cookies, sugar cookies and brownies, and her apple pie entry placed third.

“My specialty is chocolate chip cookies, but I like making a little bit of everything,” she said.

The Ransom Township resident will likely enter her apple pie in several other fairs this summer.

“I plan to tweak the recipe and experiment a little bit to see if I can do better,” Moeller said.

Moeller graduated from the Keystone College’s Culinary Arts Program in 2015.

“I learned a lot of skills, from the basics to more complex subjects,” she said.

According to Moeller, working with The Chef’s Table, a student-run restaurant, prepared students for life after college and offered valuable learning experiences.

“It provided insight into how the real world and the restaurant industry works,” she said.

Moeller has been employed by Creative Cakes & Desserts in Chinchilla since mid-April.
