1967 — One of the top stories of the week ran under the headline “A.H. teachers accept low offer but win reimbursement.”

“The Abington Heights School Board unanimously approved the collective bargaining agreement with the Abington Heights Education Assn. Tuesday night at a special meeting of the directors,” read the front page story.

“Board President Willard Chapple stated, ‘It’s a good agreement which is fair to the taxpayers as well as to the teachers.’

“James Richards, president of the teachers’ association, said, ‘I’m glad it worked out,’ adding that, ‘The teachers recognize it was a fair offer and so voted.’

“The new contract will bring four years of agreement and no negotiations.”

The contract settlement ended more than nine months of bargaining.

1967 — Several Abington area residents were in the news for various accomplishments. Some of the names appearing in the headlines that week included:

Frank Ross, of Dalton, who was elected president of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Society for Crippled Children and Adults, Inc.

Lester Green, of Clarks Summit, who, with his car number 324, a stock-rod handmade by Dave Kneisel, of Schultzville, was champion at Five Mile Point Speedway in Binghamton.

Longtime Waverly resident and football and basketball star John Ferraro, who was elected to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.

The Abington Heights Education Association met at the Clarks Summit United Methodist Church on a Sunday evening in 1977, voting to accept the school board’s offer and ending more than nine months of negotiations.
