SCRANTON — The Lackawanna Historical Society (LHS) will observe Veterans Day weekend with a special program on the Battle of the Bulge at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12 at the society’s headquarters, the Catlin House, 232 Monroe Ave.
LHS member James Dougher will present a lecture on the Battle of the Bulge with a special focus on Dr. Joseph Schectman, a Lackawanna County podiatrist.
Schectman, a member of the 3rd Battalion 424th Infantry Regiment 106th Infantry Division, was trapped during the deadly battle north of Bastogne, and was able to escape with the help of the 82nd Airborne Division. Dougher spent countless hours interviewing Schectman to tell his story, which led to a presentation by Pennsylvania Congressman Cartwright of nine medals honoring Schectman’s wartime service, including the Bronze Star of Valor, “for fearlessly running messages as the U.S. 106th Infantry Division was under massive assault by Nazi Panzer Divisions.”
Schectman died on Oct. 18, 2016 and the society was honored when his widow Harriet donated some of his WWII collection this past spring.
