SCRANTON — Marywood University will host a Professional Continuing Education program titled, “Multicultural Competence: Strategies to Address Spirituality in Clinical Practice,” from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 23 at the Nazareth Student Center in the Upper Main Dining Hall.
This program aims to share with mental health clinicians and students the research and theory supporting the inclusion of spirituality and/or religiosity into clinical work. Research, which suggests that the majority of clients seeking mental health services identify as spiritual or religious, will be presented. Likewise, although most clinical trainees report a desire for preparation in spiritual and religious issues, training programs typically fail to address these competencies.
Janet L. Muse-Burke, associate professor in the department of psychology and counseling at Marywood University, is the featured presenter for the program. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Pennsylvania and maintains a private practice in downtown Scranton.
Muse-Burke earned her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Lehigh University (APA-accredited). She has published two articles and a book chapter (in press) on spirituality and mental health. She developed the Inclusive Spirituality Index, which has been used in Africa, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Spain and the United States.
Muse-Burke has taught graduate counseling courses focused on spirituality and religious diversity and is a frequent presenter on spirituality at state, national and international conferences.
This program is approved for six contact hours of continuing education credits for NJ/NY/PA licensed social workers, addiction counselors, art therapists, audiologists, case workers, educators, licensed professional counselors, music therapists, prevention specialists, psychologists and speech language pathologists.
The program fee of $125 includes all continuing education credits, continental breakfast and lunch. Discounts are available for Marywood faculty, staff and students.
