SCRANTON — Lackawanna College welcomed Moosic resident John Chilleri as the next Police Academy director.

Chilleri assumes this role after the unexpected passing of Maryann Grippo in October 2017. Grippo served as director since 2014 and left a legacy of excellence in law enforcement training.

Chilleri has worked at Lackawanna College as a Police Academy instructor since 1991. Most recently, he was the Police Academy associate director of emergency medical response. After the passing of Grippo, Chilleri also served as site coordinator for the Lackawanna College Scranton campus.

Chilleri was previously employed as an officer at the Moosic Police Department, ending his full-time career with the rank of sergeant.

Prior to his career in law in enforcement, he was the director of training for the Regional EMS Council Emergency Medical Services of Northeastern PA. In that position, he was responsible for coordinating Pennsylvania Department of Health Emergency Medical Care Training and Certification for the five counties of NEPA.

Chilleri also served as a local level Pennsylvania state fire service instructor for nearly 10 years.

He served for six years in the United States Army Reserve as a military police officer and training sergeant.

He earned a B.S. Degree in Administration of Criminal Justice Agencies from Pennsylvania State University in 1983 and returned to Penn State in 1997 to earn his certification as a paralegal.
