Lackawanna College uses $40K PLCB grant to prevent alcohol abuse

SCRANTON — Through a two-year, $40,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB), Lackawanna College plans to expand upon and enhance current programs to prevent the abuse of alcohol.

As a result of the grant, the college purchased Alcohol-Wise, an online alcohol abuse prevention course designed specifically for use on college campuses. The program will be a part of each students’ mandatory freshman experience course, and data collected through Alcohol-Wise through the end of the spring 2019 semester will provide on-campus wellness experts with a refined picture of the current campus climate surrounding alcohol abuse.

Lackawanna students will also create a PhotoVoice exhibit of faux documentary photographs designed to address perceived and actual social norms surrounding alcohol abuse on college campuses. The PhotoVoice project will debut during the First Friday Scranton Art Walk on Friday, April 6 in downtown Scranton.

Additional exhibitions of the PhotoVoice project are planned for the Commonwealth Prevention Alliance (CPA) conference in the summer of 2018, the Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD) and PLCB conferences scheduled for the fall of 2018, and during the College’s own freshman orientation in August 2018.
