Arts and entertainment calendar for the week of July 11, 2018

PERFORMING ARTS

Playbuilding and Acting For Kids, 4 to 5:30 p.m. July 16, 18, 23, 25 and 30 and 2 to 3:30 July 21 at The Gathering Place, 304 S. State St., Clarks Summit. The classes will teach kids about theater arts, play building and acting. Michaela Moore will instruct children, ages 6 to 13, and students will create and perform an original play at 6 p.m. July 30. Playbuilding and Acting for Special Actors, 5:30 to 7 p.m. July 16, 18, 23 and 25 and 3:30 to 5 p.m. July 21 at The Gathering Place, 304 S. State St., Clarks Summit. Special needs actors will work toward performing an original play of their own making that will be performed at the Inclusion Festival July 28. Classes will be taught by Michaela Moore. Cost: $95. Freckleface Strawberry The Musical – A Sensory Friendly Performance, 10 a.m. July 20, 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. July 21 and 2 p.m. July 22 in the Chandelier Lobby of the F.M. Kirby Center in Wilkes-Barre. The show, directed by Skyler Makuch, will be presented in partnership with the King’s College Theatre Department. Sensory-friendly theatre makes the theatrical experiences accessible to audience members who may be sensitive to sensory stimuli, and their families. The show, based on the New York Times best-selling book by actress, Julianne Moore, is a fun and touching family musical.

LITERARY ARTS

Writers Group, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays (ongoing) at the Dietrich Theater. For ages 18 and up. Come and read your work or listen and be inspired. Learn the craft of writing as you write toward a goal of publication. All genres and levels of writing are welcome. Cost: free. Info: 570-249-2994.

Great American Read Book Discussion, 11 a.m. to noon July 23 at the Abington Community Library, 1200 W. Grove St., Clarks Summit. Talk about selected Classic books from the Great American Read list.

ART CLASSES & MORE

Papercrafting with Maria Pappa, 6 to 8 p.m. July 19 at the Abington Community Library, 1200 W. Grove St. Clarks Summit. Create unique, hand-made, summertime paper crafts. Each participant will create three projects. Cost: $12, paid to the instructor the day of the class.

Zine Workshop for Adults, 6 to 7:30 p.m. July 24 at the Abington Community Library, 1200 W. Grove St., Clarks Summit. The class will touch on the history of zines and look at several examples, and you will leave the program with a completed zine. Bring any original art, poetry, writing, etc. you’d like, but all other materials will be provided.

Music Box Kids Summer Theatre Workshop, sessions in July and August ending with a production of Roald Dahl’s “James and The Giant Peach Jr. Aug. 3-5. The workshop is for children ages 6-12 and is under the direction of James Daly and Jennifer Kozerski. Info/register: 570-283-2195. Caring Hands, 1 to 3 p.m. each Monday at the Abington Community Library, 1200 W. Grove St., Clarks Summit. Do you knit or crochet? Join this group that creates delightful things for the Library and for the less fortunate. Yarn provided.

Always In Stitches, 10 a.m. to noon each Tuesday at the Abington Community Library, 1200 W. Grove St., Clarks Summit. Stop and see what this bunch of quilters and sewers is up to. Get involved in one of their many charitable endeavors or learn something new.
