CLARKS GREEN — Abington Heights Superintendent Michael Mahon provided an update on the district’s facilities during a regular school board meeting July 18.

“The roof project at Clarks Summit Elementary is ahead of schedule,” Mahon said. “The board made a very valid point that we have to make sure it’s being done properly. We had the engineer come in and everyone is very pleased, not only with the time frame but also the quality of the work.”

Mahon added the district is doing drainage projects at South Abington and Waverly Elementary Schools, and that all of the sports fields have been seeded with work focused on the baseball and softball fields.

Board member Michele Tierney believes the district’s track is in need of repairs.

“I would really like the facilities committee to meet with athletic director Randy Hanyon and come up with some direction for maintenance and repairs,” she said. “For next spring, we at least need to have the lanes painted so they are regulation. We’ve also had some safety issues with the track and there have been some minor repairs.”

Mahon acknowledged the track is in need of replacement, but believes it’s safe for competition.

“I would not be in position to say that it’s a hazard and a risk,” Mahon said. “I think it’s in sufficiently good condition to allow us to get to the point when we’re going to fix it. Administration is going to continue to move from project to project and we have a series of schedules. From a safety perspective, we’re currently working on swipe cards for our locks.”
