SCRANTON — Abington-area residents are invited to explore downtown Scranton this holiday season at Small Business Saturday on Nov. 4. More than 50 retailers and restaurants will offer special promotions.

To encourage shoppers to support the small businesses, Scranton Mayor William L. Courtright officially proclaimed Nov. 24 as Small Business Saturday in Scranton.

The Shop Small movement began in 2010 as an American Express initiative designed to encourage shoppers to patronize small businesses during the holiday season. The movement gained momentum, and Small Business Saturday is now recognized in every state across the country. Scranton Tomorrow spearheaded downtown Scranton’s Small Business Saturday in partnership with the City of Scranton beginning in 2011.
