CLARKS SUMMIT — Abington Heights High School students visited the district’s elementary school as part of a Science Fair kickoff March 12 and 14.
According to high school chemistry teacher Carolyn Siwak, high schoolers who are enrolled in AP Chemistry, AP Biology and AP Physics classes showed the young students several demonstrations, ranging from lava lamps to photosynthesis to bouncy balls, in advance of the Science Fairs planned in the elementary schools next week.
“The kids have been extremely excited and really enjoy the hands-on demonstrations that they can participate in,” Siwak said. “They are getting good inspiration for what they want to do with their own projects.”
Siwak added that the older kids have an opportunity to reminisce and the teachers look forward to seeing familiar faces.
“The big kids like coming to work with the younger kids because they remember seeing it when they were elementary students,” she said. “The teachers also enjoy seeing their former students and learning how they’ve functioned over the years.”
Abington Heights senior Clay Davis participated in the event for the first time and found the experience to be rewarding.
“They love seeing the cool colors and they’ve shown, through their reactions, that they’re actually interested,” Davis said. “I think it’s really important to give them early exposure to high school chemistry and science in general.”
