Abington Journal arts and entertainment calendar for week of July 107 2019

VISUAL ARTS

Art entries are being accepted for the latest gallery exhibit at The Gathering Place, 304 S. State St., Clarks Summit. The theme for art being submitted is “Flowers, Wild and Still.” The exhibit is open to all artists who live and work in Northeast PA. Entries will be judges by a juried panel on the basis of excellence of execution and relevance to theme.

There is no entry fee; however, any works accepted for exhibit will have a $20 hanging fee for first entry and $5 for an additional piece. No more than two entries per artist are requested. “The Flowers, Wild and Still” show will be featured in the gallery for the next five weeks for the public to come in and enjoy.

The Public – special showing at the Dietrich Theater in downtown Tunkhannock, Thursday, July 18 at 7 p.m. Admission: $8.50 each. Popcorn provided by the Tunkhannock Public Library. Enjoy this special showing of “The Public,” a story of an act of civil disobedience turns into a standoff with police when homeless people in Cincinnati take over the public library to seek shelter from the bitter cold. The Biggest Little Farm – special showing at the Dietrich Theater in downtown Tunkhannock, Sunday, July 21 at 7:15 p.m. Admission: $8.50 each. This special showing will feature a mini farmers market by the Carlin Farm before the show starting at 6:30 p.m. Then at 7:15, enjoy the documentary “The Biggest Little Farm,” a film of John Chester and his wife Molly who work to develop a sustainable farm on 200 acres outside of Los Angeles. The Mustang – special showing at the Dietrich Theater in downtown Tunkhannock, Monday, July 22 at 7:15 p.m. Admission: $8.50 each. Come enjoy “The Mustang,” a film about Roman Coleman, a violent convict, who is given the chance to participate in a rehabilitation therapy program involving the training of wild mustangs. This powerful story will be followed up by a Q&A from two local organizations, Marley’s Mission and Equines for Freedom. Marley’s Mission provides equine assisted psychotherapy to children who have experienced trauma, free of charge. The mission aspires to be a sign of hope, healing and strength for all survivors of trauma. Equines for Freedom (EFF) is a nonprofit organization that treats active and former military personnel and first responders experiencing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), no matter the source of the trauma. River Day 2019 at the Dietrich Theater in downtown Tunkhannock, Saturday, July 20 from 1 to 7 p.m. at Tunkhannock’s Riverside Park. Admission: Free. Sponsored by the Overlook Estate Foundation.
